To celebrate the International Day of Monuments and Sites, this April 18, Transporter Bridges of the World will be released, a special program broadcast online to disseminate its heritage and social importance.
This short film has the particularity of having been made in times of social isolation, coordinating the editing of the material contributed collaboratively by each of the eight transporter bridges that survive in the world and that are representative of the industrial revolution. Thus, can be seen in synthesis, the stories and the deep meaning that each Transporter Bridge has in their community
Idea, Production and Realization: Silvana Canziani
This is the title of the programme produced by Fundación X La Boca and Carlos Oscar Di Lorenzo, which has been declared of Cultural Interest by the Ministry of Culture of Argentina. A virtual 360-degree experience, whereby anyone can take a trip on the Transbordador Nicolás Avellaneda from one coast to another, from La Boca to Isla Maciel and vice versa, using their computer, mobile phone, or VR headset.
The programme also provides the opportunity to learn about the history of the ferry, and the surrounding landscape and the historical and cultural heritage on both sides of the river, as it includes guided tours of emblematic sites.

Bizkaia Bridge is currently implementing its preliminary Gondola technical refurbishment project to improve its SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) compliance and visited Poliester Gabiria S.A.L. in Irun last December, specialists in the manufacture of fibreglass reinforced polyester enclosures, and was extremely impressed.

It has been a tough year due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Making it impossible for us to celebrate the bridge’s 111th anniversary. But it’s not all bad news.
Since June, when the bridge was permitted to resume its activity, the flow of visitors has been increasing steadily, exceeding the number of visitors in the 2019 season by 35%. A new record.
Also, the ferry has become a stage for open-air cultural events. It all started with musicians rehearsing outside, having been prohibited from doing so indoors, a move we are certain has opened many new possibilities for the future.
At the end of September, we were able to enjoy a radio programme broadcast from the Bizkaia Bridge by the SER radio network dedicated to European Heritage Days, featuring Andoni Iturbe, Amaia Sarasola, Begoña Ibarra, Mikel Torres and Nagore Orella.

This spring we were shocked to learn of the vandalism of the Bridge’s exhibition space, which was completely destroyed.
However, we must look to the future, and we are delighted to announce that the new museum project has already been started.
With an eye to the future, we have developed a concept that will enable everyone to learn more about the history of the ferry, including the visually impaired. And the new exhibition hall will be designed to be multi-purpose, convertible into an event hall with a small stage.
If everything goes according to plan, the new FährStuv will be ready for the start of the 2022 season, when it will host an open day.
This period of very little social activity has been used to clean and paint different parts of the structure, boarding halls, and terraces, and implement different preventive maintenance activities, such as the replacement of some of the trolley wheels, gondola wire-rope ties and mooring systems.
Maintenance work has been stepped up daily with special cleaning and disinfection works carried out at the entire facility using Viribiol Plus bactericide, fungicide and virucide, thereby helping to combat and prevent COVID-19.
Road signs have also improved to ensure gondola control and access safety during boarding. Together with the annual revision and certification of all Bizkaia Bridge lifelines.
11 September was a historic day. Signalling the return of the Nicolás Avellaneda ferry into operation, transporting workers from La Boca and Isla Maciel. At Fundación X La Boca, we celebrate the opening of the crossing, which neighbours, and organisations from both banks of the Riachuelo worked so hard to recover over many years. The ferry boat is again crossing the river as in 1914.
We include a video of the first trip in this new era.
The new opening hours are from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 7 pm, and on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 10 am to 7 pm.
The footbridge lighting has been completely renovated, with the installation of 320 metres of LEDs below its handrails to adapt to the changing times, to enhance its sustainability and meet its energy SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
